This April 2nd, as the world lights up blue for World Autism Awareness Day, we at Hope Centre Ministries are celebrating stories of hope, connection, and the beautiful uniqueness of every individual. This year, we’re especially shining a light on Kayla Dyck, a cherished member of our community, whose story of resilience and courage is inspiring others to embrace understanding and inclusion.

Kayla recently created a book exclusively for our monthly donors, titled Out of the Cocoon. In it, she shares her experiences with autism in a simple and direct way, aiming to help others understand what life is like for her. She explains how things feel, how she connects with others, and how community has been important to her. It’s a story of sharing and explaining, written to build bridges of understanding.

“I can feel very lonely and frustrated when people don’t understand me. That’s why my butterfly tattoo is so important. It reminds me, and others, that autism is just a part of me. I was made for connection and community, and I share my story to help others ‘come out of the cocoon.’” – Kayla

Kayla’s Story: Growing Wings Through Community

Kayla’s journey reflects the experiences of many individuals with autism—highlighting the need for understanding sensory differences, social communication challenges, and creating supportive environments. She shares how sensory experiences, like the feel of sand at the beach or the calming texture of kinetic sand, help her find peace and focus.

She also reveals how social interactions can feel overwhelming and how, as a child, pictures became her friends—offering a safe and familiar world when words and faces felt confusing.

At Hope Centre Ministries, we believe in the power of belonging. Kayla beautifully describes this through the metaphor of puzzle pieces, a symbol that holds deep meaning in the autism community:

“At Hope Centre Ministries, we often talk about puzzle pieces. Each of us has strengths that extend outward and areas where we need support that create space for others to connect. When we come together, our pieces fit, creating something whole and beautiful. We are stronger together.”

Lighting It Up Blue for Inclusion

Kayla’s story is a reflection of Hope Centre Ministries’ mission—to build spaces where everyone belongs, where individuals like Kayla find friendship, faith, and a place to flourish. Her book is a testament to the impact of your monthly support, enabling us to create inclusive programs where people with autism and other disabilities feel seen, valued, and loved.

“Because of you, I have hope. I know I’m loved, no matter what. Your monthly gifts help Hope Centre Ministries be here for me every day. That makes me feel safe and happy. Thank you.” – Kayla
